Can the pharmaceutical industry reduce the environmental footprint of its practices? That is the challenge taken on by Noël-Alexandre Bertout, a pharmacist in Montréal, who developed a 100% biodegradable pill organizer to replace the millions of plastic containers used every year in Québec.
Faced with the enormous amount of plastic waste generated by traditional pill organizers, BioPoc offers a solution that is eco-friendly, practical, and safe: a pill organizer made entirely from food-grade paper and compostable cellophane. Born in a neighbourhood pharmacy, the project required three years of research and development with the Tak Design team to overcome a number of technical challenges, including the development of a transparent film that is both durable and biodegradable.
Although changing habits can be difficult, particularly for older adults, this innovation demonstrates that it is possible to combine sustainability with accessibility. The familiar format remains unchanged, while preserving the product’s functionality.
