What Is the Difference Between an Industrial Designer and a Mechanical Engineer?
The roles of industrial designer and mechanical engineer are often confused or not clearly distinguished in North America. In Europe, the distinction between the two professions tends to be more clearly defined. Industrial designers generally focus on styling and user experience, while mechanical engineers handle mechanical design, material selection, performance, and technical considerations. In North America, however, the line between the two professions can be somewhat less defined.
