Can the Pharmacy Industry Reduce Its Ecological Footprint?

That’s the challenge taken up by Noël-Alexandre Bertout, a pharmacist in Montreal, who has designed a 100% biodegradable pill organizer to replace the millions of plastic containers used each year in Quebec.

Faced with the massive amount of plastic waste generated by traditional pill organizers, BioPoc offers a solution that is ecological, practical, and safe: a pill organizer made entirely from food-grade paper and compostable cellophane. This project, born in a neighborhood pharmacy, required three years of research and development in collaboration with the team at Tak Design to overcome technical challenges—especially the creation of a transparent film that is both durable and biodegradable.

Although changing habits can be difficult, particularly for older adults, this innovation proves that it is possible to combine sustainability with accessibility. The format remains familiar, and the functionality is fully preserved.

The entire team at Tak Design would like to highlight BioPoc’s commitment to this paradigm shift in the pharmaceutical industry. Best of luck in overcoming the remaining challenges to ensure this innovative solution becomes widely adopted.
